Cardinals zip to All-City and past their weaknesses (5/10) | Print |  E-mail

The triple jumper starts off slow and gradually accelerates as his first, second, and third jumps crash into the sand and beat the record of 38 feet!

On May 13, the Cardinals scrapped the competition in intense jumps, extreme field events and heated runs at the McAteer meet against Lincoln, Washington and Galileo.

Many athletes such as seniors Katherine Jarvis, Tony Wong, junior Leo Harrington and sophomore Will Chen are stepping up as All-City contenders in multiple events. Jarvis, a varsity girls’ sprinter, participated in the long jump event and planted a 16.8 feet jump while Wong, a varsity boys’ sprinter, took up the triple jump, leaping 41 feet in three jumps, beating his personal best of 40 feet and the school record of 38 feet.

Although no official scores were being kept at the McAteer meet, head coach Andy Leong entered the athletes to test their improvement. “Entering in the meet put us in a better position,” Leong said. In addition to this competitive practice, the repositioning of some of the runners balances the playing field in the upcoming events and All-City meet. “We’re trying to get Lowell athletes to match up with Lincoln athletes in the same events,” Leong said. “We still have some holes in our team, but we’re closing the gap.”

Come support the Cardinals at the All-City Finals at 9 a.m. on May 29 at Buchanan High School.
