“With great power comes great responsibility.” This lesson, learned by Peter Parker a.k.a. Spiderman, could also inspire the Lowell swimmers, especially their new captains.
As seniors varsity swimmers Stanton Huang, Nick Kwan, Cerise Tang, Kevin Lee and Erica Fung step up to the plate to being this season’s captains, the responsibility to steer the team to victory is bestowed upon them. “With their leadership capabilities, I am sure they will lead us to win the championship,” senior varsity swimmer Angela Liu said.
On March 12, all the teams — boys’ varsity, girls’ varsity, boys’ junior varsity, and girls’ junior varsity won against Galileo. There was much improvement throughout the meet. “The junior varsity was especially improved,” Lee said. “I have also been really consistent with my times and improving, so I am quite content.” This meet was also the meet in which Huang, Kwan, Lee, and sophomore varsity swimmer Nicholas Pasquinzo unofficially broke the league record for the boys’ 200 free relay.
A combination of powerful strokes and determined hearts led the Cardinals to victory against the Wallenberg Bulldogs on Feb. 26. According to senior varsity swimmer Anthony Li, Lowell’s swimmers outnumbered Wallenberg’s swimmers, but the team did not relax. Even with this edge, the Cardinals continued to strive for the best by competing for the fastest times within the team. “It was a good start for the season,” Li said. “It helped me build more confidence.”
The team started the season with the AAA relay — a friendly competition between Lowell, Lincoln, Washington, Galileo, Wallenberg and Balboa on Feb. 19. Although scores were not recorded, a competitive vibe still hummed in the atmosphere. Swimmers such as Liu strove to break their personal records. “I did pretty well for the 400 freestyle relay and was able to swim four seconds faster than last year,” Liu said. This four seconds improvement translates to reaching the finish line seven meters faster than before.
Some swimmers utilized this friendly competition to see where their AAA opponents’ skill levels lay. According to Huang, after the team saw what the other AAA teams were capable of at this meet, the team decided to work even harder to improve their times. “Now I know what to work on throughout the season,” Huang said. “We should focus more on technique and speed this year.”
Carrying a winning record while facing only three more meets before championship trials, our determined swim team needs everyone’s support. Come watch the team conquer the waters at 3:30 p.m. today at the Sava Pool against Wallenberg.
