Despite a series of shut-outs throughout the season, the girls’ softball team’s reign finally came to a halt on May 3 at the hands of the Washington Eagles. The team will challenge the Cardinals yet again for the upcoming championship trophy.
Though the Cardinals out-hit the Eagles, the Cardinals failed to overcome mental errors and the Eagles’ aggressive style of play, losing 5-7 at West Sunset Field. “I think we lost because we had lost focus,” co-captain and first baseman senior Chloe Roddy said. “It is disappointing that we lost but I hope we can take this game as more motivation to work harder to ensure we don’t repeat last year’s championship defeat.”
Although the Cardinals faced hardships against the Eagles, the Cardinals consistently shut out the weaker teams in the Academic Athletic Association and are second to Washington after a tie breaker for first coin toss. On May 5, the team easily picked up a win over the O’Connell Boilermakers 7-0, who decided to forfeit the game. Other clean wins included a April 28 victory against International Studies Academy, 25-1, and an April 26 win over the Lincoln Mustangs, 15-0.
Come support the Cardinals at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at Parkside against the winner of the playoff qualifier game between Wallenburg and Lincoln.
