Currently first in the A Division of the AAA league, the softball team holds a record of 4-0.
The Cardinals pillaged the Balboa Buccaneers with a 10-3 victory at South Sunset Field on Mar. 22. The previously unchallenging Buccaneers proved to be tougher competition than the Cardinals expected. In the first few innings, junior pitcher Michelle Willis was unable to dominate on the mound, allowing a few hits and runs, while the Cardinals’ hitting failed to provide a cushion against the Buccaneers. However, as the game progressed, the Cardinals put pressure on Balboa by picking up their offense and waking up their bats — baffling the Buccaneers with excellent base running. Willis found the strike zone more consistently throughout the rest of the game, overwhelming the Balboa hitters.
The Cardinals also swooped in to regain dominance over the Washington Eagles 4-2 on Mar. 17 at Rossi Field. Last year, the Cardinals lost to the Eagles in the championship game upset 3-4 but this year they are eager to assert their strength.
The game ended with an exciting finish and in an embarrassing play for the Eagles. With Washington senior co-captain and centerfielder Jamie Hom at third base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Eagles had two runners in scoring position and tying run on-deck, but Hom took too much of a lead and was caught in a routine run-down, ending the game with a Cardinal victory.
Come support the Cardinals tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at Kimball park against the Wallenburg Bulldogs.
