As humans, we naturally root for the underdog. As Lowell students, we have no choice but to root for Goliath. In an intense Battle of the Birds on March 18 the underdog couldn’t stand a chance. The varsity girls’ softball team managed to take down their rivals at Parkside Field.

Senior pitcher Alina Werth was a major influence during the game. “Alina almost shut out Washington during the last inning,” sophomore outfielder Emma Nakayoshi said, “It was crucial.”

The game was a long rally between the two teams. Technicalities also played a role. Bases were awarded to both teams due to questionable calls made by both umpires. And both the Eagles and Cardinals were victims of controversial calls, according to Nakayoshi.

The game lasted into the last inning, until junior catcher Chloe Roddy scored the final fifth run. Because Washington has usually been the Cardinals’ toughest opponent, the rest of the season should be a breeze.
