The girls’ varsity basketball team demolished the Burton Pumas 60-20 in a heavily one-sided contest on Tuesday.

Because the Burton team did not pose a real threat to the Cardinals, all of the players were able to get playing time. The girls used the opportunity to work on their teamwork. “As a team, it was one of our best games,” junior forward Rachel Nghe said. “We’re still working on playing as a team, and today I really felt like we did.”

Last Friday the Cardinals tamed the Galileo Lions 52-36. Lowell scored first, but was shaky on both sides of the court in the first quarter. At one point the defense allowed the Lions to take an 11-4 lead. However, the girls regained their composure in the second quarter and went into halftime up 18-17. “The game was really messy,” senior co-captain and guard Tiffany Pak said. “We didn’t get the ball to the post and we weren’t playing like we usually do.”

Last Wednesday, the girls opened their AAA season with a 61-13 demolition of the ISA Cobras.

The Cardinals were at an unfair advantage, outnumbering the ISA team 22 members to five. Unsurprisingly, Lowell dominated ISA from the opening minutes of the game. The Cardinals’ starters were substituted after only four-and-a-half minutes of play in the first quarter. Highlights included sophomore guard Katarina Lum’s spectacular lay-up in the third quarter and three-pointers from Lum and Nghe.

Though the Cobras did not have enough players to substitute alternates, they put up a fight, knocking down two three-pointers late in the game.

Come cheer on the Cardinals at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kezar Pavilion against the Wallenberg Bulldogs.
