The girls’ tennis team put away the Washington Eagles in a smashing victory this week.

On Wednesday, the Cardinals pummeled the Eagles 6-1 in their second AAA season match. Number one doubles team senior Rahwa Gebreslasse and junior Erica Wong overcame a messy second set to win their match 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Sophomore Nancy Hong played second seed singles and triumphed 6-4, 6-4 in a competitive match.

Senior Nina Liu played number one singles in the place of regular number one singles seed Karen Etin. Liu emerged defeated 6-1, 6-2 against Washington sophomore Tipper Truong, who finished second in last year’s city championships. Liu played a competitive second set in spite of the score, pushing several games to deuce, but it was not enough to topple Truong.

On Monday, the Cardinals robbed the Irish of their luck with a 4-3 win over Sacred Heart. Number one singles seed Etin demolished her opposition 6-1, 6-0. Second seed Liu rallied for a 6-0, 6-1 win, and third seed Hong served up a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Gebreslasse and Wong were also successful with a 6-2, 7-5 win.

On Friday, Sept. 24, the Cardinals failed to soar past the Tamalpais Hawks in a 2-5 non- league loss. Etin breezed through her number one singles match 6-4, 6-0 despite a back injury. Liu pulled through with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph in the Cardinals’ only two victories. Gebreslasse and Wong suffered a 1-6, 3-6 defeat in their number one doubles match.

Come root for the Cardinals at 4 p.m. at Lowell on Monday as they face the Redwood Giants.
