The girls’ tennis team suffered a bitter 7-0 defeat at the hands of the Burlingame Panthers on Wednesday in a non-league match.

First singles senior Karen Etin battled a difficult opponent, winning the first set but losing the match 6-3, 1-6, 8-10. Second singles senior Nina Liu was unable to overcome a shaky start in her 1-6, 3-6 defeat. Junior Erica Wong and senior Rahwa Gebreslasse played their first match together as the number one seed doubles team, but failed to subdue the ferocious Panthers in a 1-6, 4-6 loss.

On Tuesday, the Cardinals fell just short of the Marin Academy Wildcats 4-3 in another non-league loss. First doubles pair Gebreslasse and sophomore Kitty Kwan suffered a 4-6, 3-6 defeat in a highly competitive match.

Third singles sophomore Nancy Hong, the number three seed singles player, fell from a first-set lead to lose 4-6, 1-6. “Nancy was winning the match, but received some questionable line calls, which changed the momentum of the match,” head coach Bryan Lee said. “It’s understandable that she got thrown off her game.”

However, the match against Marin was not without triumph. Etin easily tamed her Wildcat opponent with an 6-0, 6-0 victory, while Liu sailed through in her number two seed singles match with a 6-2, 6-1 finish.

Come cheer on the Cardinals at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 29 at Washington High School as they take on the Washington Eagles.
