The Cardinals are back in the air.  The Lowell girls’ tennis team served its first victory of the AAA season on Wednesday against the Lincoln Mustangs.

The Cardinals stampeded the Mustangs with a 7-0 shutout, despite the regular number one, two, and four ranked seed singles players’ absence from the courts.

Sophomore Nancy Hong performed exceptionally as the number one singles player in place of senior Karen Etin, the regular number one seed.  Hong rallied from 4-5 in the first set, fighting off three set points to eventually triumph 7-5, 6-1 over Lincoln’s Charlene Xu in two sets.  “She played clutch tennis and executed beautifully to close out the first set, then stepped up her game and really took it to her opponent in the second,” new head coach Byran Lee stated in an email.

Sophomore Kitty Kwan and senior Rahwa Gebreslasse also played ruthlessly in their number one doubles match, taking a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win in two sets.  Sophomore Paulina Kang played number two seed singles, and also won with a solid score of 6-2, 6-2.

On Thursday, Sept. 9 the girls won a preseason match 6-2 in varsity and 5-2 in JV against the Mercy Skippers.  The Cardinals’ number one ranked singles player, Etin, crushed her opponent with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 two-set victory.  The Cardinals’ number one doubles team, Kwan and Gebreslasse, showed no mercy to the Skippers with a 6-2, 6-0 win.

Come watch the Cardinals at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 at Marin Academy as they play the Marin Academy Wildcats in a non-league match.
