Holding a 2-1 record, the girls’ JV volleyball team is off to a hesitant start. Despite winning its first game, the team has much room to improve. The ball’s in their court and they must make their next move.
On Monday, the team defeated the San Mateo Bearcats 25-20 and 25-23 in two short matches. Despite the victory, the team was not satisfied with its performance in either game, according to freshman captain and setter Gianna Braganza. “Even though we have great chemistry, we do not communicate enough under the pressure,” she said. “So we end up making many mistakes that do not accurately represent our abilities.”
Earlier, following a strong preseason start against the University Red Devils on Sept. 3., the team faced its biggest competition — the Sacred Heart Fighting Irish — on Sept. 9.
The team was defeated 19-25 and 11-25 by the Irish JV team. “We could have done a lot better because we weren’t mentally prepared for the challenge against Sacred Heart,” Braganza said. “In a sense, our opponents helped us improve.”
Nonetheless, there has been consistent scoring from the outside hitters, including sophomore Kimberly Delen-Briones and freshman Katie Hwang.
Come support the Cardinals tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. at San Mateo High School as they have a rematch against the Bearcat in their tournament.
