The Lowell boys’ and girls’ varsity fencing teams capped off an impressive undefeated season with strong showings at the All-City and All-State championships on April 30 at University High School.
Junior Alex Cheng placed first at All-City and All-State for the second consecutive year, poising himself as the front runner for the captain spot on the boys’ squad next season. On the girls’ side, freshman Stephanie Kahookele not only won at All-City, but also was victorious at All-State, defeating 13 other talented fencers to capture first place, a tremendous feat for a freshman. In addition, junior Walter Pan and senior Eddy Wu placed fifth and sixth respectively at All-State.
The Lowell’s choices for MVP are Cheng and Kahookele. Cheng’s ability to mentor young fencers, as well as learn from them, has proved crucial to the team’s success and development. Kahookele’s aptitude to thrive despite her lack of league fencing experience has gone hand in hand with her excellent fencing skill, which sure will be valued by the team in the years to come.
