With a swish of their sabres, the fencing team is artfully climbing to the top of the league.

The team is a force to be reckoned with, and remains as one of the top high school teams in San Francisco. Yet the fencers are not letting their winning streak get to their heads. “We still have to keep our focus,” senior fencer Melissa Louie said.

On April 16 the Cardinal boys’ and girls’ team each defeated the University High School’s Red Devils 5-4. Despite the intense rivalry between Washington and Lowell, the Cardinals see the Red Devils as their main competition, “Most of their fencers practice outside (of school) and they know a lot more, compared to the public schools,” senior fencer Walter Pan said. “ There was a little tension because there were some bouts we expected to win, but then we won some we didn’t expect to either.”

On March 18, the Cardinals crushed the Lincoln Mustangs 7-2 in the boys’ division and

9-0 in the girls division. “We were all pretty focused and did great,” senior fencer Arlo Lobascio said. “We have more capable people that can start, so we sub them in to give them competition experience.”

On April 8 the mighty Cardinals defeated the Washington Eagles 8-1 for the boys and 9-0 for the girls. “It isn't so much as looking at other schools as a threat,” Lobascio said. “We see them as another set of fencers to outwork mentally and physically.”

On April 13 the Cardinal girls hit a bumpy spot on their smooth road to victory, losing   3-6 against Convent of the Sacred Heart. The match lowered the girls’ standing in the league. “The girls are second place because they won seven, but lost one to the school they were previously tied with,” Lobascio said. Meanwhile the Cardinals boys defeated Convent’s male counterpart, Stuart Hall, defeating the Knights 9-0.

Come watch the Cardinals at 9 a.m. on May 15 at the All-State Invitational here at Lowell.
