On Wednesday, the cross country team reclaimed its varsity girls’ and frosh-soph boys’ titles in the AAA/SF Section Finals, and extended its streak of AAA dominance to 31 years.

The varsity boys’, frosh-soph boys’ and varsity girls’ teams all took first place to give the Cardinals the overall championship win. The frosh-soph girls conceded first place to the Lincoln Mustangs but still finished at a remarkable second place.

The varsity boys beat second-place Mustangs with 28 points to the Mustangs’ 30. Junior Alex Hillan took first place with a time of 17:18, breaking the AAA season record set last week by fellow varsity Cardinal runner junior William Chen. Only fractions of a second separated the second and third place finishers, Lincoln senior Patrick Grey and Cardinal senior co-captain Corey Worthington, who both finished in 17:21.

In the varsity girls race, the Cardinals topped the Mustangs by a mere point, 32-33. Cardinal sophomores Susan Li and Emma Keenan-Grice finished in third and fifth places with 21:45 and 21:55, respectively. Both Li and Keenan-Grice set personal records.

Making up for last season’s one-point defeat, the frosh-soph boys recorded the most dominating win, beating second-place rivals, the Mustangs, 24-45. Sophomores Raymond Lang, Christopher Ng and Chris Chow finished first, second and third with respective times of 19:16, 19:18 and 19:19.

The frosh-soph girls finished 6 points behind the first-place Mustangs. Sophomore Cecilia Fang was the top Cardinal finisher in second place with 23:54, followed by freshman Kathleen Kanalay in sixth with 24:58.

Cheer on the varsity boys’ and girls’ teams at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 27 at Woodward Park in Fresno in the CIF cross country State Championships.
