All of the cross-country team’s dedication and hard work is finally being put to the test.
On Tuesday, the team kicked off its AAA season with a win against the Washington Eagles, Wallenburg Bulldogs and Burton Pumas at Golden Gate Park’s Polo Field.
The varsity and frosh-soph Cardinal teams all finished first overall in their divisions. In the varsity boys race, junior William Chen, junior Alex Hillan and senior co-captain Corey Worthington came in first, second and third respectively.
The many preseason meets prepared the Cardinals well for the season meets. “They helped us learn how to pace ourselves,” Hillan said.
Despite their training, the Cardinals know that the real competition is just heating up. “The Lincoln girls will give us a run for our money,” sophomore Emma Keenan-Grice said. “The real thing to see is when we have our meet against them.”
On Saturday at the 27th Annual Moreau-Saucony Mariner Invitational, the frosh-soph and varsity girls’ teams both medaled with fourth and fifth places respectively in the large school division. “The whole freshman sophomore team was happy about that accomplishment. It shows that we are getting faster to place at a meet with that many schools,” Keenan-Grice said.
Individual medalers included freshman Brian Nguyen and sophomore Max Niehaus in the large school frosh-soph boys race. Nguyen and Niehaus finished thirteenth and seventeenth respectively. The top varsity boys finishers were Chen and Worthington in twenty-ninth and thirty-second places respectively.
Come cheer on the Cardinals at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park as they race against the Mission Bears, Marshall Phoenix and ISA Cobras.
