With a 5-0 record so far in the season, the boys’ soccer team is unstoppable. After a series of early blowouts, the Cardinals faced their toughest opponents in the Washington Eagles on Tuesday.

Although they posted a 3-1 victory, the Cardinals struggled to keep ahead of the Eagles’ offense for much of the game.  “We definitely struggled a bit,” senior co-captain and defender Penn Scoble said. “However, we deserved this win because we took advantage of their errors.”

While the Cardinals led 1-0 in the first half, the Eagles quickly tied up the score with a penalty kick due to a lack of communication. For the rest of the game, the team remained on defense as the Eagles kept up a steady barrage of strikers that were aggressive but futile. The scoreless Cardinals finally caught a break as an Eagles’ foul gave them an opening with a penalty kick. The boys sealed the deal with an amazing pass by senior defender Carlos Valadez and a subsequent goal by junior midfielder Cameron Basaing, who surprised Washington defenders with a shot right behind their back line.

On Sept. 16 the team faced off against the Lincoln Mustangs. Despite a scoreless first half, the Cardinals’ hard work paid off with a solid 2-0 victory. Basaing scored an impressive first goal in the second half with the combined help of junior midfielder Max Pollard. Senior goalie Julian Enis shut out the Mustangs with superb goalie work, preventing them from scoring.

On Sept. 14, the boys coasted to an easy 6-0 victory over the ISA Cobras due to the combined efforts of brothers Peter and Leo Harrington, who each scored two goals. Valadez was flawless on the field, bypassing the ISA defense and scoring two goals.

The dominance all began on Sept. 9 as the Cardinals scored a decisive victory 5-0 over Burton. The game marked the debuts of freshman midfielder Eli Alperin and sophomore midfielder Jeremy Lafortune. Sophomore midfielder Peter Harrington also played in his first game and proved his worth by scoring two goals.
