A different coach, different strategy and new line-up proved to be overwhelming for the Cardinals as the varsity boys’ soccer team lost 1-3 to San Rafael High on Tuesday.

The Cardinals now have a 0-1-1 record as the San Rafael Bulldogs easily routed the team’s defense, but sophomore forward Peter Harrington scored in the second half of the game and managed to prevent a complete blowout.

Senior goalies Julian Enis and Sergio Padilla failed to block two goals in the first half. A crucial error in the second half sealed the Cardinals fate when freshman defender Sam Scharffenberger accidentally scored an own goal for San Rafael.

Experimenting with a new strategy may have contributed to their defeat, according to senior right midfielder Eduardo Jiminez. “We had a three-man formation,” Jiminez said. “We’ve always used a four man formation but our coach wanted us to try something different.”

San Rafael also played rough and the Cardinals failed to respond to their aggressiveness.

This loss to San Rafael followed a Cardinals tie with International on Aug. 20.

Come support the Cardinals on Sept. 7 at Feibusch Field as they battle the Mission Bears in the season opener.
