The boys’ JV basketball team continued its winning streak on Jan. 11, destroying the Burton Pumas 46-30, bringing them a 2-0 record.
The boys kicked off the season on Jan. 7 with a 42-37 victory over the Galileo Lions. The Cardinals carried out an astonishing three-point play in the last seven seconds of the game to tie it up at 37-37 and push the game into overtime. The guys took control of the game, scoring a lay-up, three free throws and securing a win.
Though the Cardinals did not play superbly in the first half, the guys picked it up in the second half. “We had bad defense and didn’t take shots when we should have,” sophomore center Elijah Saunders said. “After halftime, our defense improved and we started executing our plays better.”
From Dec. 27-29 the Cardinals played in the El Camino Tournament and placed seventh out of eight. Following a 29-59 loss to the Hillsdale Fighting Knights on Dec. 28 and a 25-46 loss to the Burlingame Panthers on Dec. 27, 2010, the Cardinals snagged their first win of the tournament on Dec. 29, 2010, beating the San Rafael Bulldogs, 35-24.
“Our biggest problem throughout the tourney was we needed to work on taking care of the ball,” sophomore shooting guard Jason Ho said.
The Cardinals beat the Oceana Sharks on Dec. 23, 54-26. Despite their lack of practice, the guys pulled through, excelling at many parts of the game. The JV boys’ freshman team defeated the Riordan Crusaders’ B-team on Dec. 18, 44-30, though they struggled with making free throws. Due to poor defense, the JV boys’ sophomore team lost to the Crusaders’ A-team, 42-45.
On Dec. 17 the Cardinals destroyed the Sequoia Ravens in a stunning 57-23 victory. This win was preceded by a 39-25 victory on Dec. 14 against the Urban Blues. The Cardinals showed their skill again on Dec. 11 against the Half Moon Bay Cougars defeating them 39-29.
In the preseason the guys were able to see some other competition that they would be up against including the Lincoln Mustangs, who managed to push the Cardinals down winning with a score of 25-48.
On Dec. 4 the Cards were handed a 42-37 defeat by the Carlmont Scots, in their seventh preseason game, but were able to combat the Mills Vikings on Dec. 3, with a solid 37-28 win.
Come cheer for the Cardinals at 4 p.m. on Jan. 18 at Lowell as they face the Wallenberg Bulldogs.
