The varsity boys’ golf team remains undefeated this season after out-putting the competition at Lincoln Park. The Cardinals currently hold first place in the league with a 10-0 record.

On April 5, the team had a match against its two biggest rivals — Washington and Lincoln, and the team emerged from the match victorious with a score of 208, compared to Washington’s 231 and Lincoln’s 278. This was the Cardinals’ first match against Washington this season. “Since we lost to Washington last year in the championships, we were cautious, but still confident,” freshman golfer Scott Bang said. The Eagles are in second place with a 10-1 record and were undefeated before the match against Lowell.

The windy weather on April 21 was not ideal for golfing, and it sent shots flying left and right, according to Bang. Despite this, the team overcame this setback and easily defeated the Wallenberg Bulldogs, 217-258.

On April 14, the Cardinals triumphed over the Galileo Lions’ 312 and the O’Connell Boilermakers’ 329 with a score of 233. All members of the team played as well as they expected, according to coach Mitchell Wagner. “One of our guys, senior golfer Sam Berry, had a score of 39,” sophomore golfer Jonathan Duong said.

With the additional wins against Wallenberg 220-287 on March 16 and against Burton and Marshall with a victory of 212 compared to Burton’s score of 312 and Marshall’s 340 on March 24, the Cardinals easily demonstrated why they are in first place. Wallenberg, Burton and Marshall did not pose much of a threat, according to Duong, but the team still “stayed humble.”

Despite the Cardinals’ dominance, they embrace the fun of playing golf together. “I’m not playing to win,” senior golfer Jonathan Siu said. “I just play to have fun.”

Five starters traveled to Walnut Creek on April 19 to compete in the Transbay Tournament at Rossmoor’s Dollar Ranch Golf Course. Players had the opportunity to play on a much more difficult golf course. “We did well,” Wagner said. “There were some pretty good scores.” The Cardinals played against teams from across Northern California and gained beneficial experience. “They had the chance to watch people their own age play a really good game,” Wagner said. “It was a whole other level of golf going on.”

Wagner is proud of his team’s performance this season. “This is the first year that we have a full crew of good golfers.” This year, Wagner said he is emphasizing a mental approach to the game. “Last year we just worked on ball striking. This year we’re working on strategic play.”

Come support the Cardinals at 3 p.m. on May 5 at Lincoln Park against the Lincoln Mustangs and Washington Eagles.
