With a gentle swoosh, the basketball arcs through the hoop, as sophomore point guard Katarina Lum watches triumphantly.
Lum has been playing basketball since third grade, and this is her second year playing for Lowell, presently on varsity. She was on junior varsity last year, where her team went undefeated and won the AAA championship.
Lum has helped lead the team to many victories, and presently the Cardinals hold a division topping 3-0 record. “She always plays hard, like in our last game she made six threes in addition to other layups and freethrows,” junior team member Veronica Chan said.
Lum expressed that her own skills have grown over the season. “I’m getting into the mindset that I’m on varsity now and the level of competition has changed greatly, so I’ve been stepping up my game and always giving 110 percent on the court.”
Outside of school, Lum plays for the Enchantees, an Asian club team, which travels to places like Sacramento, San Jose and L.A. “What I love about basketball is the intensity and the speed,” Lum said. “I love the excitement, and it’s very competitive, like me.”
