The team huddles together before the race, encouraged by the words of captain Karen Chin. “Confidence in myself and the team is crucial,” Chin said.
Chin, who is also an illustrator for The Lowell, has run cross-country at Lowell since freshman year, showing growth as both a runner and leader since then. Now, as a senior, she has led the team to win the All-City title with her energetic guidance, coming back from a defeat last year, according to senior runner Amanda Lee. “Karen came into the season with a positive spirit and always encouraged us,” Lee said. “She knew how much we wanted our title back, and worked very hard as captain to make that possible.”
The entire cross-country team values Chin’s fierce support, according to sophomore runner Priscilla Ta. “Before a race begins, she's always bubbling with energy and trying to calm and motivate people,” Ta said. “She once said, ‘Turn that nervous energy into fun or hyper energy.’”
Other runners appreciate Chin’s efforts to facilitate team bonding. “After practice Karen encourages us to stretch, socialize and get to know each other,” Elliott said. “For example, we played name games.” Chin also coordinated a Halloween bonding run.
Chin is an approachable and inspiring captain, according to junior runner Clare Elliott. “I try to be loud and proud, and have a presence that will get people’s attention,” Chin said. One of her mottos is “don’t shun or be shy.”
