The “woosh” of the tennis racket cuts through the air, and with a resounding whack, the ball races across the court with senior number two singles player Nina Liu’s two-handed forehand hit. Playing tennis since the age of eight, Liu has grown to love the sport. “There is a sense of individuality when I play tennis,” Liu said. “And I also get satisfaction from playing and contributing to the team.”
Liu has gone statewide, having played in tournaments in the United States Tennis Association for five years, competing against players from all over Northern California. Impressively, she has helped defend the Lowell girls’ varsity tennis team’s championship title for all four of her high school years. This year, Liu has played against top non-league teams, winning five out of eight of her matches. “She is known as ‘the wall’ because she returns all of the hits that come her way,” sophomore number three singles player Nancy Hong said. Now, as a senior, Liu leads the team as a co-captain. “Nina has a positive attitude and she is always supporting the team,” senior number one singles player and co-captain Karen Etin said. “She cheers for players even when she is in the middle of her own match, and she is also really helpful in organizing the fundraisers for the team.”
