Mayor Gavin Newsom visited Lowell today to award the school with a certificate of honor and meet students and staff.
California Lieutenant Governor-Elect Gavin Newsom came to the school Mods 9-10 to present principal Andrew Ishibashi with the City and County of San Francisco Certificate of Honor award recognizing the school’s academic performance.
Ishibashi expressed his pride in the school and respect for Newsom. “I felt very proud of our school and most of all, proud of our mayor now that he is Lieutenant Governor of California,” he said.
Newsom wanted to show his appreciation for San Francisco Unified District schools before departing the city, according to assistant principal Michael Yi. “Because he’s leaving San Francisco, he came to recognize all the good things Lowell has done,” Yi said.
Newsom also dropped by the library to meet the school community. “He just came in the library and said, ‘Hi guys! What are you up to?’” librarian Alison Shepard said.
Students took this opportunity to take photos and get autographs. “Everybody wanted to get a picture,” senior Mo Ying Tsui said. “I felt really honored to take a picture with him, and to have him sign my senior boat picture.”
Board of Education member Hydra Mendoza, who is also Newsom’s Education Adviser, was instrumental in planning the visit, according to Ishibashi.
Newsom also visited other schools in the district, according to Shepard. “The mayor went to three elementary schools and one middle school before he came around eleven,” she said.
