An assistant principal has been in and out of school while recuperating from multiple injuries after an accident over the summer.
Assistant principal of building and grounds Michael Yi missed a step and fell while hiking in LaoShan, Qingdao, China in mid-July. He is now in casts and a wheelchair after multiple bone fractures on both arms and wrists and one foot.
Yi’s doctor advised him to rest during recovery but Yi has been occasionally coming to school or working on urgent work from home. “Since the accident was right before the beginning of the school year, it negatively affected the preparation of my portion of the school job,” Yi stated in an e-mail.
The district sent retired district administrator Marigrace Cohen and retired social studies teacher Steve Granucci to fill in for Yi. “We’re here to do whatever they need us to do,” Cohen said. “What I can’t do, Granucci can do and vice versa.”
Yi’s temporary replacements went to work in Yi’s new office, Room 100A, a change from Room 101. Although the clutter of boxes in his new office added to the difficulties, Cohen said they are managing. “The start of every school year is difficult, even with a full administrative staff,” Cohen said.
The administration has been working to make sure that the school continues to run smoothly in Yi’s absence. “Yi is difficult to replace,” Cohen said. “There are many details to his position. Some of his work has been taken on by the other administrators and Granucci and I are offering all our support to them.”
Some Shield and Scroll members have helped with office work as well. Yi said he is very thankful to all the staff members that have helped him out.
