Staff members of The Lowell won a cornucopia of awards this year at a contest for high school journalists in Northern California.
The Northern California Press Women’s Association held a ceremony for the winners on May 17 at the Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco. Twelve staff members of the Lowell took home a total of 15 awards in eight categories.
Junior Ryan Yu’s photo entry Sail Away won first place in Northern California and was submitted to the National Federation of Press Women’s Contest, where it won third place.
“I’m proud to be recognized for my hard work,” Yu said. “This award encourages me to continue expanding my photographic horizons.”
Other competitors felt equally honored to have received recognition. “This award is an awesome way to end my senior year and my last year on The Lowell,” said senior Sandra Chen, who won second place for single-page layout.
Journalism faculty advisor Sharn Matusek was pleased with the results. “This contest was particularly fun and exciting because it is student-centered," she said. “Also, professionals judge them and make the effort to give personal critiques, which most contests don’t do.”
