Peace Corp members are mourning the recent death of a colleague, a former student of the school, who fell ill while volunteering.

Alumnus So-Youn Kim, Class of ’03, passed away on Nov. 16 while serving in the Peace Corps in Marrekech, Moroccco. Kim died unexpectedly from an illness, according to a Peace Corps media release.

“So-Youn was an incredibly wonderful person,” Advanced Placement Economics teacher Jim Spellicy said, who had known Kim when she attended the school. “When she entered a room one was instantly drawn to her personality.”

While in Morroco, Kim worked as a youth development worker and English teacher. Kim also focused on developing a pottery cooperative to support the spread of the historic craft.

After graduating, Kim went on to graduate from Stanford University in 2007 before entering the Peace Corps.
