Sounds of laughter and music dance down the second-floor extension hallway as club members prepare for an upcoming school event.
The sounds are emanating from a celebration of Latino culture, La Raza Unida Club, where members are busily preparing a collaboration dance for todays Winterfaire.
La Raza Unida is a place where Latinos can feel united at Lowell, sophomore member Rodrigo Duran said. And its a place where people can come and learn about our culture.
Club members are preparing a combination of Latino dances, composed of different styles that including salsa, merengue and reggaeton, according to Duran. These styles are more family-gathering oriented, according to junior co-president Mayra Lopez. It is the kind of dance that would be performed at a church gathering, senior co-president Tania Gonzalez said.
One of the dances is usually done at a girls quinceñera, an important 15th birthday party that celebrates girls entrance into adult society.
This spring the club hopes to hold an assembly that will discuss Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday, as well as other Latino cultural holidays, including Cesar Chavez Day.
La Raza Unida meets at 3:45 p.m. every Wednesday in Rm. 258. |
