Ever hear those wild girls yelling from the other side of the school? Yep, that’s right.  The unstoppable girls of the drill team have come out on top again.
Continuing their legendary streak, the girls took home the gold again at the Annual San Francisco Junior Reserves Officers’ Training Corps Spring Competition on May 16. The team said they felt relieved that their six-days-a-week of grueling practices paid off, according to junior commander Jennifer Li.  “All the hard work led up to that day,” she said.  “We just thought to ourselves, ‘Yes, we did it!’”
As preparation for the competition, the girls stomped their way to first place in the annual Six Flags Magic Mountain Dance and Drill Tournament in Los Angeles on April 25, despite facing dozens of unknown So-Cal teams.   “They were all very good and we could tell that they practiced a lot for this competition,” sophomore member Cindy Huang said. “The competitiveness made this so much more exciting for us to know that we were competing against teams who had a lot of potential.”
In the Six Flags Competition, most teams used recordings of songs for their routines, but the girls presented something fresh to the judges by using their voices, according to junior member Maybo He.  “By doing something completely different than what the other teams did, we must have impressed the judges,” she said.
The girls are always ready for battle, but He said she felt the Six Flags Competition strengthened the mindset of the team.  “Six Flags really prepared us mentally for the SF JROTC Competition,” she said.  “From the beginning we were taught to be together and we intended to keep it going that way.”
Though the girls maintained their seriousness throughout their stay at Six Flags, they knew how to let loose as a reward for their win.  The team had fun and bonded, according to Li.  “Since we were down there, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to go on rides,” she said.
Though the team will lose senior captain Amanda Hoac, junior commanders Li and Kiana Carvajal and other juniors on the girls’ drill team, will lead the girls to another successful year.
