An electrician who visited the school at the end of March accidentally activated the daily registry bells.
The bells were activated when the electrician came to update the school clocks, which were running an hour behind after Daylight Savings Time ended on March 8, according to assistant principal Michael Yi.
Yi said he believes the registry bells are a good idea, but the administration must decide whether to keep them. “It’s not a bad idea,” he said. “It reminds kids to get to reg on time.”
After a teacher complained about the time of the bells, which originally rang at 9:25 a.m., Yi called the electrician in to adjust the bells to ring daily at 9:30 a.m., the exact starting time of registry.
Senior Stephanie Yee said she approved of having the bells, but only for registry. “It alerts teachers to end class on time,” Yee said. “Reg is the few times where everyone gets out at the same time.”
However, other students said they preferred having no bells for registry. “We should not have bells because it’s really loud and distracting,” senior Shirla Shan said. “Everyone is already used to having no bells, so we don’t really need it.”
Others were indifferent. “I don’t like bells, but I don’t care,” Social Studies teacher Anna Slavicek said. “I find the bells annoying but one bell is not a big deal.”
Yi will bring up the issue of whether or not to keep the bells at the next weekly administration meeting. However, he said that the issue is at the bottom of his priority list.
