The administration is planning to install wireless Internet service around for teachers and staff to access beginning next fall.

The campus will have Internet access anywhere on campus starting next semester, according to system administrator Alex Hsieh.  “During the summer of 2009, the school district will install the new routers,” he said.
Once the routers are installed, only teachers and staff will be able to use the wireless service.  “We’ll initially provide the Internet access to teachers and staff anywhere in the buildings,” Hsieh said.

According to assistant principal Michael Yi, previous wireless routers had to be removed because they had minimal security, giving outside sources opportunities to hack the school’s information.  “SFUSD wanted us to switch to the more expensive, but more secure, CISCO routers,” he said.  “However, our budgets made us want to buy the cheaper ones.”

The school will be aided in the router installation.  “If we get the CISCO routers, the SFUSD will install and configure the machines for us,” Yi said.

The new routers will increase Internet accessibility on campus.  “Since the CISCO routers will have better quality, they will reach out to more people,” Yi said. “We will be placing one router in every section of the campus, including the bungalows.”

According to Yi, donations from Lowell parents made purchasing the new routers possible.  “If we had more donations, we could buy more routers and provide Internet access to even more people,” he said.

Students said they appreciated the step towards more advanced technology, assuming that students might someday have access.  “Having the better routers is a good way for people to use their own computers instead of going to the library,” sophomore Karen Li said.
