This season, the varsity boys’ golfteam is teed up and ready to swing for the championships.

Theteam is currently in first place with a 3-0 record. The team’s rival,Washington, is also undefeated.

A week ago, theCards blew out the Galileo Lions with a 231-323 victory. On March 10, the teamwon 231-269 against the Lincoln Mustangs, who had placed fourth last year inthe AAA city division. Sophomore golfer Edwin Mak led the team with a score of43.

Lastyear, the team had a flawless season until they suffered an unexpected 8-strokeloss to Wallenburg, resulting in a second place finish. This year, the teamhopes to work harder to redeem themselves. Senior golfer Aaron Chin said, “Weare where we want to be.”

OnMarch 3, the team’s first match against Galileo and O’Connell was cancelled dueto the heavy rains. The rain postponed the match, but did not stop the teamfrom having a muddy intersquad match at Lincoln Park instead.

Currently, the team is on par, boasting a roster that has many returning upperclassmen.Despite the loss pf fprmer captain Edward Chen, the team will continue to driveforward.

However, the teammust maintain focus and stay consistent until the end, according to Mak. “Wehavce to beat ourselves,” he said. “All of us need more distance in our shots.”

Theteam will have some divots to fix along the way, according to Chin. “A lot ofus are new and we lack experience,” he said. “Our biggest competition willdefinitely be Washington — we beat them last year, but they didn’t lose any keyplayers.”

CoachWagner continues to help the team improve in alignment and technique. “CoachWagner really spends time watching and correcting (the strokes of) everyplayer,” freshman golfer Jonathan Duong said. “He emphasizes our short game.”

Comewatch the Cardinals on Monday at Lincoln Park in a competitive match againstWallenburg and Washington. “We had a lot of momentum last year, but we took thecompetition too lightly,” Chin said. “We won’t make the same mistake again thisyear.”
