Bow, shake hands, then attack!

Beginning in late January, Lowell’s fencing team started with eleven practices that appeared to be an elaborate game of tag. At the practices, two masked offenders went against each other with their light and flexible foils in air. They faced each other in a game of quickness, the constant anticipation of the opponent’s next move felt through the stillness.
The team’s practices were going well until, before the season started, the numbers of practices were curtailed due to the fencing coach’s absence. Although junior co-captain George Feng expressed that the team had been hoping to have more practice time, they still remain confident in their ability to win in the upcoming matches.
With a team of 22 members, there is no room for disappointment. “We have a great team with a lot of great new people,” Feng said. “A few of them made it to our starter team and they are very skilled.”
On March 12, the team went up against Lincoln. The team expected to overpower the Mustangs based on past games. Last year the girls beat the Mustangs 7-2 and predicted they would beat them again. The lady fencers dominated the Mustangs with a score of 9-0 while the boys also did well with a score of 7-2.
The March 10 match against University High School proved to be a defining moment in the season. University reigned last year as the city’s undefeated team, building on their previous record as their boys’ team has been undefeated since they entered the San Francisco High School Fencing League three years ago.
Yet on the day of the match, the Cardinals made a true comeback and defeated them. Although things looked bleak in the beginning for the boys, they picked themselves up from the ashes with a score of 2-4 to defeat the Red Devils with a close score of 5-4. Freshman fencer Alex Cheng delivered the finishing blow in the last match making the Cardinal fencers victorious after the intensity of the game.
“The game put us on the edge of our seat the whole time,” junior fencer David Seeto said.
University is known for having a strong team, but despite the Cardinal girls match against University’s secret weapon sophomore Amanda Serbe, the Cardinals remained confident enough to win with a score of 6-3. “The team was especially worried about Serbe," junior team captain Melissa Louie said.
