Set, spike, ace! That’s how the boys’ varsity volleyball team won the
city championship last year, and that’s how they plan to win it this
year.
Although the team lost two seniors, the returning members are taking the lead and guiding promising new players toward victory.
This year, the team seeks perfection. “Our goal is not to lose a single set,” senior libero Michael Li said.
Sophomore opposite hitter Wayland Huang shared Ho’s optimism. “I think we’ll get to championships this year, but we still continue to work out hardest and try our best,” he said.
Although the team has some new and inexperienced players — four freshmen and a sophomore — they have a lot of potential, according to Ho.
Li also sees a successful season ahead. “The first practice went extremely well,” he said. “Even though it was our first practice, the feeling was the same as a practice in the middle of the season last year.”
The team has high hopes for this season regardless of the loss of two powerful senior starters, Nigel Caba and Joshua Jhung, who served as the muscle of the team in their 12-2 season last year. With them gone, the team will look to senior middle blockers Jonathan Li and Chris Leung, each a staggering 6 feet 4 inches, for power. “Overall, we are a short team, except for Jonathan and me,” Leung said. “We’ll overcome that with our passes and digs.”
The team is confident they will maintain their standing over the competition. Galileo, last year’s runner-ups, lost some experienced seniors. Balboa, last year’s third place team, will probably be their main competition. “It will definitely be an interesting season this year,” Leung said.
Come watch the boys dig their way to victory in their next preseason game at
5:30 p.m. today at Valley Christian High School against the Valley Warriors.
