The Cardinal fencers once again bared their sharp teeth, menacing
talons and ever-so-intimidating foils at their opponents during the
All-City competition on April 12. The girls kept up their speedy
footwork, clever hand maneuvers and skilled workmanship throughout the
trials, coming away with eight wins and no losses, easily taking first
place. The boys, however, placed third, winning only five out of eight.
None of the four boys who competed for All-City qualified for the top eight, but all three girls made it to the All-State Invitational, which begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. at Lincoln. Senior Weina Zhao and junior Natalie Ho placed third and fourth in the girls’ division, respectively. Sophomore Melissa Louie placed sixth.
“The girls really dominate,” fencing coach Scott Cunningham said. “They’re really strong this year.”
Cunningham is looking forward to All-State. “All-State is going to be just for fun,” Cunningham said. “Unlike All-City, which affects our overall placing, All-State is just a chance to fence different people from other schools. It’s a new and refreshing experience.”

The Lowell’s choices for this season’s most valuable players are sophomores Melissa Louie and David Seeto.
The fencers’ energy and dedication to the sport have brought the entire team success throughout the season.
“Melissa is always the happy energetic one on the team,” sophomore Johnny Zhou Chen said. “I can always count on her to cheer me on. She’s top notch. She puts a lot of effort into fencing.”
Cunningham agreed. “Melissa has done quite a lot for the team this season,” he said. “I’m really proud of her — of everyone on the team.”
Seeto has also been a strong contributor. “David is extremely hard-working,” Zhou Chen said. “Once he was at Halberstadt (Fencers’ Club) from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. practicing his fencing.”
Seeto is consistently improving and “is fantastic for one who hasn’t had much experience fencing,” Cunningham said. “He’s blossoming really quickly.”
