Sophomore Max MacKenzie was aiming for the green. “I hit the ball really low but it hit a bird that was on the ground,” said MacKenzie, whose shot at practice ended up killing the bird. “I felt bad for it.” Innocent birds are not the only victims of the boys’ golf team’s rigorous practices; their opponents are also feeling the pain.
“We are the team everyone wants to beat,” sophomore golfer Sam Berry said. Currently 8-0 with big wins over Wallenburg and Washington, the team has already clinched a playoff position.
Lowell’s team score of 217 on April 1 at Lincoln Golf Park easily beat Wallenburg and Washington’s scores of 234. On April 14 they posted a team score of 211, their best of the season, against Galileo. “We’re more focused this year,” junior Aaron Chin said.
Coach Mitchell Wagner has high hopes for his team. “My guys are on the verge of going to the next level of golf,” he said. “They have started to execute the shot they’re trying to hit instead of hoping they can do it.”
Berry has distinguished himself with the team’s best scores. “It feels good knowing I can shoot that well and go beyond the high school level,” Berry said. But every good golfer has something to work on. Berry claims he needs to work on his short game.
He could also use more support from the Lowell community, which is noticeably absent from matches. “The student body should support our team,” Berry said.
The next big game is at 3 p.m. on April 29 at Lincoln Golf Park against Wallenberg and Washington.
