Artisan burgers have never thrilled me, with their beef’s snooty credentials and towering prices. But my first bite of one of Roam Artisan Burgers' grass-fed patties changed my mind almost immediately with its robust flavor and juicy, thick texture. For the first time, I was glad that I had not gone to In-N-Out Burger.
Located on Union Street in the Marina District, Roam offers burgers of all types, including all-natural bison, free-range turkey and house-made veggie burgers. And despite the slightly over-the-top interior, Roam is a comforting place to enjoy a twist on America’s favorite sandwich.
Although all of Roam’s burgers are tempting, I went for the French and Fries burger with a beef patty, avocado, gruyère cheese, carmelized onions and truffle parmesan fries ($6.99). The burger itself was deliciously juicy, even though the gruyère wasn’t fully melted and took away from the burger. Other highlights on the menu are the Pacific Blue with blue cheese and onions and the Sunny Side with egg, onions, white cheddar and a sweet chili sauce. If you fancy a simpler burger, Roam offers a Classic with traditional toppings, or you can make your own customized burger.
Roam also offers a variety of milkshakes, fries and salads. Although we tried neither the overpriced milkshakes nor the salads, the fries were crispy and delicious. Roam offers not only normal French fries, but boasts sweet potato fries and a ‘Zucchini Onion Haystack,’ a fried concoction similar to onion rings. For only fifty cents more, you can add a truffle parmesan, lemon chive or chipotle maple seasoning. My dining companions and I ordered the Fry-Fecta ($4.99) a combination of all three kinds of fries, as well as another side of russet potato fries with truffle parmesan seasoning. Although the russet potato fries were bland and dry, the Zucchini Onion Haystack had sweet onion flavor and was salted perfectly. The Fry-Fecta’s colorful arrangement was worth every penny and held enough fries for two to share.
With most burgers costing $6.99, Roam’s pricing is reasonable, especially considering the organic ingredients used. The wait for food is short and the service was efficient and fast. For a casual, filling meal, visit Roam and treat yourself to a burger and fries — it’s worth the bus ride on the 30, 45 or 22.
