Potential change of coach concerns cross-country team (4/05) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Aiko Weverka & Michael C. Novak
As a pillar of the athletic community, Lowell Cross Country Coach Andy Leong has committed countless hours towards coaching the young men and women of Lowell. He devotes his weekends, afternoons, and a significant portion of every summer molding the cross-country team into the excellent condition that it’s in now. Despite his impressive and extensive coaching record which spans eighteen years and boasts over thirty varsity championships in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions, he is being forced to step down due to a simple union by-law. This thoughtless rule gives any teacher, regardless of their lack of previous experience, priority when requesting to coach a team even if the position is already filled.

We believe that it is unfair, unconscionable, and unacceptable to strip someone so devoted to the Lowell community of his life’s work. This is his team. We ask that the administration look beyond the union regulations and consider the opinion of the runners who will be most affected by this abrupt and unwarranted change in leadership.
