As a tradition, four JROTC companies compete to bring in the most canned foods every holiday season. The winning company will receive points in the unit proficiency part of the all-around competition at the end of the semester, according to senior drum corps commander Bryan Lee. Every year the JROTC donates around 600 to 800 pounds of food to the San Francisco Food Bank, which then distributes the food to hundreds of food pantries and agencies throughout San Francisco, according to lieutenant colonel Douglas Bullard. The drive “gets us in touch with the spirit of giving,” Bullard said. “We give small things, but it’s those small things that add up.” Other school clubs and organizations are busy collecting donations for a food drive that Student Body Council sponsors, according to SBC club coordinator senior Soe Ma. The donated items are counted as an alternative to community service hours for club credit. The donated items from this drive will also be sent to the San Francisco Food Bank, according to events coordinator junior Gregory Gee. In addition, Kids Helping Kids in Crisis is holding its annual school-wide toy and book drive, according to senior club president Catherine Woo. Students can donate old books and toys in good condition by placing them in the bins outside the main office, according to Woo. The donated items will be sent to Edgewood, a shelter for neglected and abused children, and the Hamilton Family Center, a resource center for low-income families.
