JV football refuses to be stopped (10/09) PDF  | Print |  E-mail

In a classic football fantasy, the running back clutches the ball and is filled with bolstering adrenaline, cutting left past the defensive back, and then sprinting straight ahead, a touchdown seems imminent. Only 20 yards left and …THUD! The running back gets a full-on head-butt into his back. The running back, however. keeping on his feet, charges forward — TOUCHDOWN!

On Oct. 8, the JV football team faced the Eagles in a rough game. All of the sweat put into practice paid off as the team was able to steal a 16-13 victory. The Cardinals trailed twice during the game, once at 0-6 and the other at 8-13. When they trailed 0-6, the team was able to score a touchdown and the two-point conversion, giving them the 8-6 lead. The Eagles then managed to score once again but the composed Cardinals scored yet again, sealing the 16-13 victory. With four minutes left on the clock, the Eagles hit our Cardinals with waves and waves of attack. But with their heightened defense, the Cardinals were able to hold the Eagles back four times, twice preventing the Eagles from scoring from the one-yard line.

Fullback and middle linebacker sophomore Reggie Webb, who scored the first touchdown of the season said that everyone has to contribute to make the play successful, “Everybody has to be doing something to get a play done,” Webb said. “When they have to do it, they do it well.”
Offensive guard and defensive tackle freshman Hiromi Fujitou agreed with Webb, “It felt really good to see us score,” he said. “I know people didn’t believe in us but we finally pulled through,” he said.

On October 1, the Cardinals lost 0-6 against the Lincoln Mustangs; though still a loss, the game was a huge step forward from the wide-margin losses in the start of the season. To utilize the setbacks is key. “Men always learn more from their failures,” JV football coach Ken Jew said.

At this point last year, Washington held first place and Lincoln held second; now a contender has surfaced, the victorious Cardinals. With two expected challenges behind them, the team’s schedule will be much easier. “The games from this season on will be less difficult,” Jew said.

Although the team added another loss to its record, the players continue to gain more experience as the season progresses. “The running backs are now running straight through and hitting the defense line a lot faster –— in the beginning of the season they were kind of hesitant. Defense is getting stronger and holding its positions better as well,” quarterback sophomore Daniel Maionchi said.

The returning players have also improved, displaying characteristics of strong leaders by guiding the newer players onto the correct path. And as for the new players, Jew said that they are doing great and are improving at an exceptional pace.

To ensure this development, the players are exposed to everything from lifting, running, conditioning and play-by-play instruction, according to Jew.  In addition, the team emphasizes the absolute need to bulk up themselves up. “I don’t think there’s any limit for this team, these are Lowell students,” Jew said.

Jew and assistant coach Bob Bosch put a lot of time and work into shaping the players. “We’re definitely a stronger team than last year, I have a pretty good feeling this season. We just want to make our coach feel proud,” wingback and safety sophomore Aiden Judge said.

And with newfound confidence, the team is expecting more wins to come as the season goes on and to build towards a blow out of the other teams. “We’re sending out a message that we’re no longer a pushover, we’re going to bring it!” Webb said.

The team will continue to strive for the top this season, so why not go and support our JV football team at 3:30 p.m on Oct. 23 at Lowell against Thurgood Marshall and 3 p.m on Oct. 29 at Lowell against Burton.
