Cards Hope to Remain Under Par, Above Competition (4/09) PDF  | Print |  E-mail

After falling short of the championship trophy for two years in a row, the golf team is aiming straight for the gold. The undefeated team is dominating the league with a 9-0 record as rivals Washington and Lincoln trail behind.
Although the Cardinals are currently first in the league, their average team score for this year is 230 — a tie with Washington. Following their unexpected loss during the championships last year, the players have learned to not let their guards down. “Even though we are undefeated, we might end up like last year if we are not focused,” senior golfer Ronald Radoc said.
On March 23, the Cardinals birdied their way to victory over Washington and Wallenburg, last year’s city champions. Their team score was a respectable 230, 16 strokes better than the Eagles. Wallenburg proved to be no competition, struggling to stay under 300.
Since then, the team has continued to challenge themselves playing against other competitive Nor-Cal teams at Transbay. Five Cardinal golfers played in the 18-hole tournament, which was held at San Ramon Golf Club on April 13.
According to freshman golfer Tom Ebergen, the team must focus on consistency. “Our short game will be crucial in close matches,” Ebergen said.
This year so far, the team has kept their shots in the fairway and their score in the 230s. The Eagles have had more ups and downs, ranging from the 220s to the high 240s.
“We did not change the way we practice,” junior golfer Patrick Berg said. “But our players lowered their individual scores.”
However, the team’s untested confidence just might be their biggest weakness. “We need to stop being big-headed and just play the game,” Radoc said. “We are closer as a team, but the golf skill still needs to get there.”
Come support the Cardinals 3:30 p.m. next Tuesday at Lincoln Park in their rematch against Washington and Wallenburg as they shoot for the championships
