One of Lowell’s
greatest contributors is retiring this year after 54 years of dedication to the
school. Known as “Mr. Lowell,” Paul Lucey is stepping down as executive
director of the Lowell Alumni Association. The Lowell would like to applaud Lucey for his exceptional work. Lucey’s relationship with the school started in 1954 when he was hired as an economics teacher. He went on to serve as assistant principal for 15 years starting in 1969. While part of the administration, Lucey worked with a fellow administrator and faculty member to create the Lowell Plan, mapping out the “self-scheduling” system that is still used today. After being an administrator and teacher for 30 years, Lucey became the executive director of the Alumni Association in 1984. His duties included organizing class reunions, writing annual newsletters and handling communication from fellow Alumni Association members. Not only has Lucey played an active role influencing Lowell’s campus, he has ensured the preservation of our school’s history by writing two versions of A History of the Oldest Public High School in California.
In an effort to
give Lucey credit for his contributions, former Lowell principal Paul Cheng
established a scholarship in his name that is given to a senior who has shown
similar school spirit.
Lucey’s legacy and
contributions are imprinted in the campus. The Lowell would like to acknowledge Lucey’s role as a defining
part of the Lowell community. Thank you “Mr. Lowell” — you will be missed. |
