Drama and theater tech students will be acting, building, presenting a film and facing their rivals at the annual theater competition at Ohlone College on April 4 and 5.
Drama students will be performing pieces ranging from monologues to group scenes. Theater tech students will be constructing a prop according to the event’s theme, as well as painting it and adding lights. Themes are announced on the day of the event, so students must think and act quickly. Many students are excited to compete again, especially with the addition of the film category which Lowell students had not previously participated in. Junior Karel Ebergen initially decided to enter a film for fun. “My drama friends and I were joking about WestSide Story — actors versus techies, and then we thought ‘Yeah, good idea,’” Ebergen said. His video entry involves a song, dance moves and an original script. “I’m crossing my fingers that the video has good shots,” he added. Ebergen has previously entered the competition as an actor and a monitor. During this year’s event, Lowell’s 10th time at the competition, the group of Lowell competitors will be smaller due to a scheduling conflict with spring musical rehearsals. “Everyone in the musical can’t do Ohlone, so techies and actors had to choose between the musical and the competition,” junior stage manager Sofia Montgomery said. The event is centered on student creativity, so teacher assistance is not allowed during the competition. “It’s mostly a student thing,” Montgomery said. “Mrs. B’s room is where the rehearsals take place, but the event isn’t supposed to be that influenced by the faculty.” Many students started practicing their scenes and memorizing their lines a month prior to the competition. “I’m really worried about getting everything done in the few weeks remaining,” junior Max Wallace said. “But normally when Lowell does stuff we’re better than everyone else,” he added. Drama students and techies hope that confidence will enable them to beat their long-time rival at the competition, Bishop O’Dowd High School. In the weeks before the event, drama and theater tech students are rehearsing, memorizing and hoping to win some bragging rights. “It’s a lot about winning, but it’s also a lot about having fun,” Ebergen said. |
