Beep's Burger Review (3/08) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Aaron Light
Located at 1051 Ocean Ave., just off the K tracks and mere blocks from City College, Beep’s Burgers offers quick, modest and tasty meals for an extremely affordable price.  Although not quite an all-American staple, Beep’s is fashioned in the style of the classic drive-thru burger joint.  Located in urban sprawl, this tiny shack of a restaurant with its derelict parking lot, cartoonish sign and a single table for eating, Beep’s is certainly unpretentious. Predictably, the best food at Beep’s is the more conventional fare like burgers, fries and milkshakes.  The char-grilled burger patties, although not made to order, have a hand-rolled look, erasing any worry that they came from a frozen package.  The fries are bountiful, golden and crispy.  The milkshakes are creamy and sweet, although not overpoweringly so, making them the perfect addition to one’s gluttonous lunch.
Food at Beep’s is consistently on the cheap side, with a half-pound burger and fries costing $4.80. Among the most expensive items are the teriyaki bowls ($5 - $6.25) and the bucket of 20 chicken nuggets ($7).  Some of the menu’s least expensive items are the hot dogs ($2.34), tacos ($2.12), burritos ($2) and quarter-pound burgers ($2.75).  Beep’s extensive — and in many cases bizarre — menu also includes pork chops, breakfast sandwiches and donuts.
The less conventional fare at Beep’s isn’t their selling point, however.  The teriyaki bowls are filling and the chicken strips are hot without being oily, but nothing offers the same sort of satisfaction that comes from devouring one of their divine hamburgers.
Although one could conceivably walk from Lowell to Beep’s, driving is probably the best plan of action, with riding the K car coming in at a close second place.  It’s not just that a car ride to Beep’s takes about 10 minutes and a train ride about 15 minutes, it’s that, in keeping with drive-thru tradition, one is encouraged to eat in the car.  The wait at Beep’s is relatively brief, as orders are usually ready in five to 10 minutes.
For those students who have a few mods for lunch — or a fast means of transportation — Beep’s is a delightfully simple burger joint that carries on the tradition of the all-American drive-thru.
Overall: 4 Stars
