Boys Tennis (3-21) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Julia Kotzian

Lowell couldn’t be happier to return to the friendly confines of AAA play after a rough 2-5 preseason start.
The March 7 match versus Menlo Atherton is a perfect example. The Cardinals lost 0-7, but most of their matches were close.
"Our playing shows that we're very hopeful to repeat in AAA, and everyone is playing with a desire to win," junior Frank Lu said. "It's the right mentality to have."
To compete against tough non-league opponents and to crush league ones, Lowell has put in some extra work. “Our team has been working very hard on doubles and improvements all around, such as serves, volleying and baseline game," sophomore Dylon Tong said.
The additional practices weren’t enough to beat Crystal Springs or Saint Ignatius, but gave Lowell the edge during the match against International High School.
With fingers crossed and high hopes, the Cardinals look to a strong season, but realize there is more to the game than just winning. "If we lose, then we lose, and we analyze what has to be done to improve our game," sophomore Jonathan Woo explained. The team shares this positive attitude because they love “tennis way too much to get upset over one loss; the pain is always temporary."
However, the Cardinals cannot rely solely on optimism to carry them. Two major obstacles stand in their way to another AAA championship: team chemistry and injuries. "Having new players makes the team chemistry especially important in doubles," freshman Will Chan said. In addition, sophomores Will Chan, Dylan Tong and Brandon Cai have sustained severe shoulder injuries that are preventing them from playing.
Despite these challenges, coach Jimmy Rosenheim is proud of this year’s teamwork. The Cardinals improved, becoming “faster, more stable, more savory, smarter,” he said. A good example was when the boys shot out the matches against Antioch, winning both 7-0. Lu, one of the star players, captivated his second match 6-0, 6-0, played amazingly.
Lowell will find out just how nice it is to be back in the AAA when it plays its league opener against ISA at 3:30 p.m. on April 2nd at Lowell.
