Legendary "Prophecy" is MVP (3/08) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Avi Baskin
Over the past four years, Senior Travis Hom has given more to the Lowell basketball program than almost any other student. Dubbed “The Prophecy” his freshman year, Hom is now Lowell basketball legend. A starter on the varsity team since his sophomore year, Hom has been the consistent go to guy for the Cardinals. This year was Hom’s greatest challenge. After the graduation of co-MVPs sharp-shooter Jordan Wong and power forward Arthur Jones Jr., the Cardinals were left without the height and size they have had in the past. Despite injuries, Hom led the team to within one win of a championship, and for that, he is The Lowell’s pick for Most Valuable Player.
Perhaps the best example of Hom’s will to win this season came at Battle of the Birds. Down 20-4 after the first quarter, Hom rallied the Cardinals back to a five point difference by halftime. After Lowell and Washington exchanged punches in the third quarter, Hom stepped up further in the fourth quarter. With less than a minute left Hom sank an NBA ranged three pointer that gave the Cardinals a two-point lead. Hom finished with 24 of the Cardinals’ 55 points in the biggest Battle of the Birds comeback ever.
Although Hom played excellently the entire season, he could not bring the Cardinals another city championship. He missed by inches, literally. In the semi finals against Mission, the heavily favored number-one seed, the Cardinals were looking to surprise the league. Down by three with ten seconds left, Hom shot a three pointer that went in, but somehow rattled out. The Cardinals lost to the Bears 58-54.
Hom hopes that he can continue playing basketball after high school. “If I go to a junior college, or City, I will definitely play,” he said. “Wherever I go, I will try to walk on.”
