As American tennis star Stan Smith once said, “Experience tells you what to do; confidence allows you to do it.”
The girls’ badminton team returns ready to defend its five-year championship title, this time with a secret weapon: experience. With six returning players and only two new players in the starting line-up, the team is geared up to dominate the courts, in both singles and doubles. Take seniors Joyce Lew and Tiffany Wong for instance. Having played doubles together for three years, this power pair is ready to taste sweet victory again. “Everyone’s pretty much playing on the same level,” Lew said. “We’re hoping for first.” Even new players are seasoned badminton standouts. Freshman Oriana Chiu, having worked with a personal trainer outside of school for five years, grabbed a highly coveted starting spot. “She has a lot of potential,” Lew said. Paired with returning senior Nancy Mei this year, Chiu will be able to mature faster under Mei’s experienced wings. “You’d be lucky if you become a starter by junior year,” senior singles player Joanne Poon said. “We want [Chiu] to start playing doubles now so she can eventually move up to play singles.” The Cardinals are also planning ahead to keep their winning legacy alive. With a total of 18 girls, 12 of whom are new alternates, the team is expanding in hopes of training new players. “We have a very devoted team this year,” Poon said. “We narrowed the team down to those who are good and those who can eventually become starters and replace the graduating starters next year.” The girls’ next match will be at 3 p.m. April 1 at Lowell against Wallenberg High School. |
