New AP policy going smoothly (2/08) PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by Bonnie Tong
The new policy requiring students to stay with the same Advanced Placement teachers for the entire year in certain courses went smoothly during the self-scheduling process on Friday, Jan. 18.            Implemented by the administrative council, the policy requires AP English, AP World History, AP European History and AP Biology students to stay with the teacher they had during the fall semester.
“There were no problems at all (during self-scheduling),” social studies department head
Alice Kwong-Ballard said. “Everything went perfectly and teachers were happy.”
AP European History teacher Monty Worth agreed. “It went very well and was easier because (students) didn’t have a choice,” he said.
Some students agreed that the policy made arena smoother. “It was actually easier for me because I knew I had to stay with the same teacher,” sophomore Wendy Chak said.
Three students did switch teachers in AP European History, however. “They couldn’t (fit the same teacher into their) schedule,” Worth said. “They got the department head’s permission, so it wasn’t too hard.”
Sophomore Josephine Wu was almost one of those students. “I went to my counselor and said I wanted to switch back,” she said. “She called the department head to confirm that it was a rule to keep the same teacher year-round, so now I’m back in Ms. da Rosa’s class.”
Social studies teacher Thais da Rosa explained that even though she has new students, no problems emerged. “They just have to settle in and learn new skills, like outlining, for my class,” she said.
