Swimming classes are available again for students who need to fulfill the graduation requirement but at a new location that causes issues with transportation and safety.
“The new swimming facility is too far from school,” counselor Douglas Morales said. “The facility needs to be within walking distance from school and currently, it is not.” The swimming class is held at the Balboa pool, 2.8 miles away from the campus, which is 10 minutes away by car, according to Mapquest.com and 30 minutes away by bus, according to Transit.511.org. “Students could have an accident or be robbed on their way to or from the pool,” Morales said. “It’s a safety issue. We can’t expect students to take public transportation back to school.” Another problem, the transportation time between the pool and school, is partially resolved. According to sophomore Su Min Lin, “a lot of the students who have a Mods 4-5 class usually get rides,” she said. “But when they don’t, they’re definitely going to be late. There’s not enough time between changing and getting on the bus back to school.” Twenty-one students are currently enrolled in the class, according to physical education and swimming instructor Terence Doherty. “I don’t feel it’s unsafe,” he said. “There’s a risk everywhere. There are muggings a block from here. There’s no difference between Lakeshore and from the pool and from what I’ve heard, the students have been getting to class on time.” The swim classes used to be located at Sava Pool on 19th Avenue, 0.9 miles away, roughly three minutes away by car and 13 minutes by bus. Pool construction caused the location switch. “It was shut down — knocked down to be rebuilt.” Sava Pool will be re-opened in early October at the very earliest, according to Doherty. |
