TV Lowell bringss new elements to daily broadcasts PDF  | Print |  E-mail
TV Lowell members are currently working on their next show after broadcasting their first live show of the school year on Jan. 16.
Broadcast by Radio Lowell announcers, TV Lowell will draw attention to school activities using video clips, according to English and drama teacher Sam Williams, the TV and Radio Lowell sponsor.  “The purpose is to raise awareness about sporting events and school opportunities,” he said.
Producers hope the medium will appeal to students.  “It’s a new plan to make announcements more interesting and accessible to students,” Radio Lowell announcer senior Rose Guthrie said.
Williams hopes to involve other departments in TV Lowell broadcasts.  “We may broadcast clips from games and sporting events,” he said.  “We would also like to involve the art department as well by showing some of their projects on the broadcast.”
The first broadcast involved members of the journalism program.  “The Lowell photographers made a slideshow of sports games and the dance assembly,” Williams said. “Ideally we would have used video clips but we are still learning about how to use the equipment, so for the first broadcast we used the digital photos with live commentary.”
Once a schedule is arranged for TV Lowell broadcasts, the current Radio Lowell crews will rotate TV and Radio broadcasts.  “We’re planning on trading off duties show by show,” Guthrie said.
Registries that do not have access to TV Lowell broadcast may go to the auditorium for future broadcasts. “That is how it was originally planned for the broadcasts from last spring, but it is still under discussion,” Williams said.
Originally broadcast last spring under the direction of Radio Lowell sponsor and drama and English teacher Teresa Bookwalter, TV Lowell was discontinued due to technical problems. “TV Lowell involves a lot of logistical coordination and technical work, and some registries do not have access to a television or to the channel that it is broadcast on,” Williams said.  “We are still working on these problems but in the future we hope to be able to show video clips edited in advance to promote school events and provide information and entertainment.”
Senior Aza Tetelman said she enjoyed the first broadcast. “I am excited to see what else will happen with TV Lowell,” she said.
