Bursting with new faces and new talent, the JV girls’ basketball team is in for a great season.
Take freshman point guard Erin Ng for instance. Although only a rookie, she should not be underestimated. Ng is fast on her feet and makes quick decisions. As one of the three captains on the team, Ng already holds much responsibility and is expected to do great things. “(Ng) just came on to our team and became one of our leaders,” junior forward Holleigh McMasters said. “She leads the team in bruises and never gives up.” A familiar face to the Cardinal lineup is sophomore forward Miya Yung, a key piece to the team’s past and future success. “She is always determined to play well and is one of our leaders out there,” Ng said. “She always plays for the team.” Although Lowell has many strengths this year, the biggest might be size. “We have a lot of height this year,” McMasters said. For example, sophomore center Cicely Barker’s stature is enough to intimidate any defense. “She’s a giant,” McMasters said. Because this team has players who haven’t played together for more than a few months, it still has a lot of work to do. Surprisingly however, team unity is another one of Lowell’s biggest strengths. “Everyone works really hard, has good hustle and makes a great effort,” McMasters said. “We need to work on our aggressiveness and defense. We hope to use the preseason to improve and eventually win city championships.” Ng agreed. “We want to start off each game aggressively and be fired up from the get-go,” she said. “We’re in for a good season, and we plan on playing all out.” The goal for this year is to defend their city championship title, keeping it out of the greedy claws of the Washington Eagles. The Cardinals will begin their championship dreams with their first regular season game against Burton at 3:45 p.m. on Jan. 4 at Lowell. |
