Two actors from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival performed six scenes on Nov. 27 in the Carol Channing Theater. Students reported varied reactions. Junior Evan Rivera-Owings, who attended the Mods 6-7 show, was pleasantly surprised by the variety of scenes performed. “I didn’t expect it to be that good because Shakespeare tends to not be that interesting,” he said. “But it wasn’t just me that enjoyed it; the entire audience was captivated.” Sophomore Rachel Baskin agreed that the show was entertaining but said she wasn’t impressed by its content. “A lot of people thought it was funny, but it wasn’t very original,” she said. The performance was an overall success with no technical problems, according to technical director Darcy Villere. “It was the best Oregon Shakespeare Festival tour I’ve seen, and this is my sixth or seventh year,” Villere said. The actors also ran workshops during the Mods 11-12 and 14-15 drama classes. Bedard and Willingham conducted drama games, facilitated readings and discussed Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Junior Dashiell Hillman attended both the workshop and the performance. “They had a different way of doing things, like focusing more on competitive games than working as an ensemble,” Hillman said. “It was good to see how they worked in person. They were full of energy and very involving.”Bedard and Willingham tour locally for the Oregon Shakespeare’s Education Department, while other OSF acting teams tour nationwide. According to Bedard, OSF evaluates each school on the tour — Lowell received all excellent scores from past performers. English teacher Staci Carney organized the visit with the sponsorship of Lowell alumnus Terry Abad. |
